Wada Farms is currently planting next year’s crop. While potatoes from last season are still plentiful in the market and there is no issue with supply, large-sized Russet potatoes will be short in Idaho until new crop comes on.

Potatoes smaller than previous years

Crop in general has been experiencing a smaller profile than in previous years. The overall price in Idaho reflects the lack of size in harvested potatoes and grower return is below the cost of production. “Our large cartons of potatoes which are shipped heavy to food service companies have seen an increase in price due to the lack of quantity of larger potatoes caused by weather issues last growing season.” explains Kevin Stanger, Vice President of Sales for Wada Farms. “However, the market for small sized potatoes continue to be near record low levels.”

Majority of potatoes sold to food service industry

Generally 60% of potatoes are sold to the food service industry, with the remaining balance sold to retailers and a small amount to wholesale. “We are always pursuing new varieties, new colors, and developing new packaging,” states Stanger, “we’re always trying new ways to market potatoes and were the first in the United States to offer a microwavable package.”

Decrease in consumption of fresh potatoes

Consumption of fresh potatoes has slightly decreased with industry groups like the U.S. Potato Board, the Idaho Potato Commission and others working to excite consumers again. “We continue to work to increase demands for fresh potatoes and help consumers realize fresh potatoes are part of a healthy diet,” adds Stanger.
