The global financial crunch has had a negative effect on potato equipment sales this year. Growers have found finance more difficult to get and the weaker value of the pound has not helped.

Despite the problems, suppliers remain cautiously confident. Dewulf claims to have sold the same number of machines this year in the UK as last.

“Two-row versions still head sales, but the growth area is for three and four-row machines,” says Ploeger’s Izak van Eijzeren.

Although there were a number of new self-propelled harvesters at Potato Europe, some suppliers are keeping their powder dry until Agritechnica in November.
