La patata es originaria de América del Sur, pero la región tiene el nivel más bajo de producción de patata del mundo, con menos de 16 millones de toneladas en 2007.
La patata sigue siendo un cultivo tradicional para los pequeños agricultores de la región andina, donde se cultiva junto con especies de patatas desconocidas en otros lugares.
En otros países - Argentina, Brasil y Colombia - la producción de Solanum tuberosum por parte de los cultivadores comerciales a gran escala está aumentando.
