委内瑞拉西部的安第斯山脉北端是大约20种野生马铃薯的发源地，是该国马铃薯的主产区。在海拔2000至2500米的生计农业地区，马铃薯是耕作的主要作物，而商业化生产则集中在拉腊州的丘陵地带。
自二十世纪60年代以来，马铃薯产量一直稳步增长，在1990-2007年期间产量几乎翻了一番，达到创纪录的45万吨。委内瑞拉的马铃薯几乎全部作为鲜薯销售，促使政府采取措施，让生产多样化，以便生产适宜加工的品种。尽管人均年消费量仅为12公斤，但是在2005年为满足需求进口了超过8万吨的原料和加工马铃薯。
在委内瑞拉境内安第斯高原地区种植的马铃薯正在因适应该地区气候和生态条件的马铃薯遗传多样性的丧失而受到威胁。一项正在开展的计划鼓励农民利用当地品种生产无病种薯。(来源: 国际马铃薯年)
