Cornish Crisps flying high

The Cornish Crisp has been chosen by Qantas Airways to be the crisp for business passengers on flights from London to Dubai from 1 September.

Qantas is committed to supporting smaller, high quality companies and there were great celebrations at the little unit in rural Cornwall, where the crisp is made by local hands using locally grown potatoes.

Once dubbed “the crisp with a conscience” by the Times in London, its makers have refused to supply a number of large supermarket chains, to satisfy the delis and farm shops, who want something different and to keep the brand’s production values high. They have twice been highly commended in the small business category for the Cornwall Sustainability Awards and will be listed in the 2013-14 CoolBrands index

The owner Sue Wolstenholme said: “We checked out Qantas when news of their interest came and were thrilled to see that they share many of the same values as we do, buying small amounts of locally owned, tasty products and taking great care of their customers. We felt wonderful when the order came through!”

Talking about the crisp itself, she went on, “The potatoes we use are not the usual ‘crisping’ varieties, grown especially for crisp makers with high dry matter because they have very little real potato flavour. Also, too often, they can be very hard or even sharp, which can be tough to chew for tired gums. These Cornish ‘taters’ are tasty, like crisps used to be and they are light and gentle in the mouth.”

The impact of the Qantas order, on this small company has been tremendous.
