Company Description

The Southern Agricultural Growth Corridor of Tanzania (“SAGCOT”) Initiative is a Public-Private Partnership with the objective to boost agricultural productivity, improve food security, reduce poverty and ensure environmental sustainability through the commercialization of smallholder agriculture.

Initiated at the World Economic Forum (WEF) Africa (WEFA) Summit in Dar es Salaam in 2010, the partnership will run for 20 years up to 2030.

The potato is a crop that is well suited for production in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania and which can make significant contributions to food and economic security.

Through its assessment of partner activities in the corridor, the SAGCOT Centre recognised a critical mass of actors who were interested and active in establishing a commercial potato value chain in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania.

After a series of exploratory meetings, a coalition of partners came together to launch a project to introduce improved seed, mechanisation and good agricultural practices to farmers.
