Dutch Potato Starch Manufacturer Avebe is considering to extend the potato starch production in its Gasselternijveen plant in order to be able produce more Solanic potato protein.

Due to the rising demand for vegetable protein - including potato protein - Avebe is unable to keep up with the existing production line for potato protein. Avebe has installed a second production line, effectively doubling the capacity.

Both Solanic plants are located in Gasselternijveen. The first plant was initially constructed as a test plant in 2007 and was expanded in 2015 to meet the rising demand for protein.

Meanwhile demand has grown so strongly that Avebe wants to benefit from its second production line as much as possible. For that reason, Avebe has investigated whether sufficient potatoes would be available to run the Gasselternijveen plant as long as into May.

Janet Katerberg, spokesperson for Avebe:

“Avebe is checking which potato farmers can still deliver starch potatoes in April or later.”

“We are even looking at additional volume from potatoes initially intended for the production of French Fries or Potato Flakes. Due to the large harvest, potato prices are rather affordable.”

“It is actually the world upside down, because in the past, potatoes intended for the starch production were occasionally sold for other markets.”

Potatoes contain 1 - 2% protein. Solanic is Avebe's brand for high-performance protein isolates for food applications. Avebe also sells potato protein for animal feed, branded Protastar®.

Solanic® high-performance potato protein isolates allow manufacturers to meet current consumer needs in health, clean labels, premium quality and convenience. This breakthrough combines excellent texturising and nutrition with a ‘free from’ label – all from a unique process and the potato as a natural source.

A recent market research report estimated the global market for potato protein in 2017 at USD 72.2 million.
