Detroit Friends Potato Chips is a community organisation that started manufacturing potato chips, initially intended as a way to add new purpose to vacant lots inside of the Hope District (Detroit).
This initiative eventually created opportunities for new employment that has created wealth, work, and helped participants to regain their dignity.
Detroit Friends Potato Chips produce a 'thick and filling' potato chip that is hand-fried and hand-flavored, all very small scale. The chips are made from potatoes that are grow themselves in vacant lots in Detroit
Proceeds are going to their soup kitchen.
The initiative became well-known far beyond Detroit when Oprah Winfrey listed their potato chips in her 2016 list of 'Oprah's favorite things'. Detroit Friends Potato Chips are sold online and in a dozen+ locations in Detroit.
