Weather wreaking havoc for Prince Edward Island potato growers

October 06, 2011
Potato farmers on P.E.I. are worried about their fields after record rainfall in many parts of the province Wednesday followed by some hail and snow Thursday.

There was plenty of harvesting equipment sitting in fields across P.E.I. waiting for the land to dry out.

Potato grower Randy Visser was hoping for some rain after a dry September, but not the more than 72 millimetres that fell Wednesday.

“We got it, we got a bit more than probably we needed,” Visser said.

Across the province, it's estimated by farmers that only 10 per cent of the crop has been harvested so far. Some growers are a week or more behind schedule.

“The further you get into the fall, the shorter the days get, colder, more chance of rain, so a little bit concerns we'll get it all out because we've really got a long ways to go yet,” Visser said.
