Queensland floods continue to impact potato sales

March 09, 2011
The impact of January's Queensland floods has continued, wiping out demand for Victorian potatoes.

Gippsland's fresh-potato growers are enjoying one of their best seasons yet but demand from Queensland, which makes up 60 per cent of the market, has plummeted.

The Rocklea wholesale markets, near Brisbane, were inundated by floods in January and are not back to full operation, while several nearby vegetable packers remain closed.

Potato farmer Mike Durkin, who also owns a packing facility near Thorpdale, said demand from Queensland was down about 90 per cent, throwing harvest plans into chaos.
