EMSLAND GROUP welcomes the approval of Amflora by the European Commission. Cultivation of genetic modified crops will be an important prerequisite to secure long term competitiveness for the European potato starch industry.
The Amflora registration process took many years and Emsland Group developed alternative amylopectin potatoes with help of classical breeding. First commercial processing of these non-GM amylopectin potatoes took place in Cloppenburg and Kyritz during last autumn. Amylopectin is an attractive raw material that has applications in many market segments.
Due to the delayed approval Emsland Group decided not to grow Amflora in 2010.
