Potato growers accept McCain contract

August 01, 2008

P.E.I. farmers who sell potatoes for processing to McCain Foods voted in favour of a new contract at a meeting Thursday night.

Unlike those growing for Cavendish Farms, who rejected three contracts before signing, the McCain growers accepted the first offer before them.

Both contracts contain a clause offering about 60 cents more per hundredweight.

The McCain growers wanted also to be paid for smaller potatoes, and help with the cost of diesel to get the harvest from the farm to the plant.

The Cavendish growers are getting assistance with diesel, but McCain was not willing to offer both benefits to its growers. The farmers opted for payment for smalls.
