Calbee Launches New U.S. Plant

September 18, 2007
Japanese snack food maker Calbee Foods Co. Friday launched operations at a new plant in California for making its mainstay products "Kappa Ebisen"shrimp chips and "Saya-endo"snow pea crisps.

The new plant has a monthly output capacity of 200,000 cases, triple the amount at the old plant in California, the company said.

The new plant is the biggest U.S. plant for a Japanese snack food maker.

With the boosted output, Calbee will promote sales of such healthy snacks, while avoiding head-on competition in the market for potato chips in the United States.

Toward that goal, Calbee will increase its sales personnel in New York, said Masanori Yasunaga, president of Calbee America Inc.
