ChainCraft, founded in 2010 as a Wageningen University spin-off, specializes in creating biochemicals through a unique, proprietary fermentation process that transforms organic waste into value-added products.
ChainCraft’s main product line, Medium Chain Fatty Acids (MCFA)—including Caproic Acid (C6)—serves diverse applications such as animal feed, lubricants, plasticizers, polymers, coatings, and flavors and fragrances.
The company’s open mixed culture fermentation technology is non-GMO and non-sterile, allowing for efficient, continuous production with operational and cost benefits. This method accommodates a range of low-grade feedstocks, including food waste, agricultural by-products, and municipal organic waste.
After its pilot phase in 2015 and subsequent funding from AKEF, the Port of Amsterdam, and PDENH, ChainCraft launched a commercial demonstration plant at the Port of Amsterdam in late 2018, achieving an annual production capacity of 2,000 tonnes of fatty acids.
ChainCraft aims to expand to a flagship plant with a capacity of over 20,000 tonnes of MCFA, actively seeking collaboration with upstream and downstream partners to co-develop innovative and sustainable applications within this expanding biochemical platform.
