Origin and Breeding History

This potato originates partly in South America and partly in the Netherlands and Germany. The first crossing was made with the wild South American variety in 1997. This relative was known to be resistant to Phytophthora.

The breed was back-crossed a number of times with existing breeds, and this process was concluded by a crossing with Agria as the final mother variety due to its many positive traits. One of the father varieties during the process clearly left its mark in the form of red-eye.

The breed is named after the 16th-century botanist Carolus Clusius. During the opening of the Pieperpad in 2009, visitors were asked to come up with an appropriate name, and they eagerly complied.
