Japan sets safe residue level for 1,4SIGHT® in potatoes, paving the way for optimized storage practices worldwide.

April 05, 2024

In a significant stride towards facilitating global potato trade, 1,4GROUP and DormFresh have announced the attainment of Import Tolerance for the sprout inhibitor 1,4-dimethylnaphthalene (1,4-DMN) in Japan.

The Japanese Ministry for Health, Labor and Welfare (MHLW) updated food residue standards in early March, incorporating a maximum residue level of 15 mg/kg for 1,4-DMN in potatoes, effective immediately.

1,4GROUP initiated the application process for 1,4-DMN import tolerance in Japan in April 2021. Following meticulous review and risk assessment by Japanese authorities, including the Japanese Food Safety Commission, it was concluded that residues of 1,4-DMN in potatoes up to 15 mg/kg pose no health concerns.

This favorable determination underscores the safety and efficacy of 1,4-DMN, further bolstering confidence in its utilization during the storage season.

Jeanette VonKrosigk, Global Regulatory Affairs Director at 1,4GROUP:

"We are delighted to announce that 1,4GROUP has been granted a Maximum Residue Limit (MRL) by the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare. The ministry’s assessment concluded that residues of 1,4-DMN in potatoes pose no health concerns. This favorable determination is a significant step forward in enhancing the global trade of potatoes."

The setting of import tolerance for 1,4-DMN is anticipated to promote global potato trade and optimize storage practices worldwide.

John Hren, Global Sales & Marketing Director at 1,4GROUP, Inc.:

"We are working with our market channel partners ensuring that 1,4SIGHT® expanded use is seamlessly integrated into their operations."
